Privacy
TheMany was built around a simple principle: we cannot be compelled to hand over data we do not have. This page explains exactly what information is handled when you use TheMany and where it goes.
Last updated: May 2026. This policy covers the TheMany service at wontbeignored.org.
The short version
What information we handle
When you use TheMany to raise a civic issue, the following information is involved:
Your issue description and submission content
The text you write — your description of the issue, how it has affected you, what you are asking for — is sent to the Anthropic Claude AI API to draft your submission. This is temporary processing only. The content is not stored by us after drafting and is not retained by Anthropic (Anthropic's business API terms prohibit them from training on API data).
Your partial postcode
We use the first part of your postcode (for example BT1 4 or SW1A 2) to look up your local representatives via Postcodes.io and the Parliament Members API. This is a lookup request only — no postcode is stored by us.
Your medical condition (optional, healthcare submissions only)
If you choose to provide this to help us find relevant support organisations, it is used only for that purpose during your session. It is stored encrypted on your own device only. It is never sent to our servers.
Donation payment details
If you make a donation via card, your payment is processed by Stripe. TheMany never sees your card details. Stripe's own privacy policy applies to that transaction. Donations are anonymous — we do not record names or email addresses alongside payments.
What is stored and where
On your device (encrypted, private to you)
Your submission history, FOI and SAR requests, deadlines, reply logs and any supporting notes are stored in your browser's local storage, encrypted with a key that only exists on your device. We cannot access this data. Nobody can access it without physical access to your device.
If you clear your browser data or use a different device, this data will not be recoverable. You can export a backup from your dashboard at any time.
On our servers (anonymous only)
When you complete a submission, an anonymous civic record is logged to our database. This record contains only: the type of issue, the geographic scope, the local authority area, a submission reference, and a timestamp. It contains no personal information.
This anonymous data powers the public civic record at wontbeignored.org/record and the usage statistics on the transparency page. It cannot be traced back to you.
FOI and SAR request references are also logged anonymously to track response deadlines for aggregate statistics. No personal details are included.
Third-party services
TheMany uses the following third-party services. In each case only the minimum necessary information is shared and none of it identifies you personally.
| Service | Purpose | Data shared |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic Claude API | AI drafting and analysis | Submission text only — no personal identifiers |
| Vercel | Hosting and serverless functions | Standard server logs (IP addresses) per Vercel's policy |
| Supabase | Anonymous database | Anonymous civic records only — no personal data |
| Stripe | Donation processing (optional) | Payment data processed directly by Stripe |
| Postcodes.io | Postcode area lookup | Partial postcode only — not stored |
| Parliament Members API | Finding your MP | Constituency name only — no personal data |
| MapIt | Constituency boundary lookup | Partial postcode only — not stored |
Your rights under UK GDPR
Under UK data protection law you have the right to access, correct and delete personal data held about you. Because TheMany holds no personal data on our servers, these rights are straightforward to exercise:
Right of access — We hold no personal data about you on our servers. There is nothing to provide.
Right to erasure— The only data held about you personally is on your own device. You can delete it at any time from your dashboard using the “Clear all data” option. Any anonymous civic records in the public database contain no personal information and cannot be linked to you.
Right to object — You can stop using TheMany at any time. No ongoing data processing will occur.
Right to portability — You can export all your on-device data as a JSON file from your dashboard at any time.
If you believe we have not handled your data correctly, you have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Cookies and tracking
TheMany does not use tracking cookies, advertising cookies or analytics cookies of any kind.
The only browser storage used is localStorage for your encrypted submission data and a small unencrypted alert flag that tells the app whether you have approaching deadlines. Neither of these is a cookie and neither is used for tracking.
There is no Google Analytics, no Facebook Pixel, no third-party advertising network and no session recording software on this site.
Children
TheMany is designed for adults raising civic issues. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 16. If you believe a child has submitted data through this service, please contact us and we will investigate.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to how we handle data, we will update this page and change the date at the top. Because we hold no personal data, changes are unlikely to affect you in practice. If we ever introduce any form of data collection that is not described here, we will make it clearly opt-in and update this policy first.
